A Postural Restoration specialist works to unwind muscular compensation and pain patterns that stem from an asymmetry of the internal organs. This respiratory-based modality relies on positioning the body in conjunction with breathing to reset the neuromuscular system’s “original” posture.
Postural Restoration techniques stem from the Postural Restoration Institute (PRI), that was started by Ron Hruska, a physical therapist. When practiced consistently, this modality of working with the body produces long-lasting results, though even one session can yield significant results. The benefits include:
» Injury healing and prevention
» Soothing the nervous system, thus leading to maximum utilization of the body’s energy systems
» Increased flexibility
» Elasticity without stretching
» Building a foundation for a lifetime of safe, consistent fitness
PRI is suitable for anyone and everyone, and the training works well in conjunction with all forms of fitness and wellness practices. The pain management techniques is perfect alongside physical therapy. The full-body strengthening and breath control that results is ideal for cross-training- from weight lifting, to Pilates, to endurance-based workouts.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A POSTURAL RESTORATION SESSION
With PRI training, many of the exercises will be familiar but will be performed with different cues. You will learn new methods for squatting, pressing, pulling, ab work, with a respiratory-based lens. You can expect to frequently use your abdominal cavities for breathwork.
Our Postural Restoration specialist will start with repositioning your body. The ribcage is stacked over the pelvis and pelvic floor (positioning may be asymmetrical depending on the pain severity/compensation patterns). Our specialist will then lead you through weighted work with resistance training, while coaching you on proper breathing techniques. The exercises are considered relatively basic and hands-off, yet highly effective.
