Cupping

Cupping is a therapy designed to stimulate the flow of blood and qi within the superficial muscle layers. Stimulating blood flow encourages a natural healing process in the body – both physically and emotionally. This type of manual therapy is used for many ailments such as sore muscles, tension, headaches, neck pain, back pain, and even the common cold.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A SESSION?

During a cupping session, small glass or plastic cups are placed on the body and a vacuum is created using heat or suction. The cups may be moved over an affected area or left in place. The suction of the cups draws blood to the surface of the skin and can create redness (much like a hickey) but the redness is superficial and will dissipate quickly after the treatment.

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?

Many people say that cupping feels like a deep tissue massage. The relief to the muscle and tissues around an affected area can last for weeks. The marks left by cupping are not painful and generally disappear after a few days.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CUPPING?

Cupping decreases muscle tension, improves circulation, and reduces inflammation of an affected area. The body can hold emotional tension and so it is also an effective treatment to reduce emotional stress.

Cupping has been practiced for centuries all over the world. According to eastern medicine, stagnant blood and poor energy flow can cause certain health problems. Cupping therapy aims to release and move stagnant blood thereby increasing the body’s repair and recovery process.
