Out of Bike Fit Hell thanks to Jerry Gerlich!

I’ll cut to the chase and make a LONG story short. I have had MANY bike fits in my life. Typically what happens is that within a week or 2 I’m making changes. Raising the saddle, moving it forward or back, lowering the saddle, changing the stem… You get the idea. I can safely say that I have never gone more than a couple of weeks riding without make some change to my position.

This past November, I went down to Austin to see Jerry Gerlich. Jerry spent quite a while trying to get everything to his liking (and mine…). Most of the changes seemed minor, with the exception of the new shims and wedging in my shoes. (Which is a big deal!) Anyhow, it has now been 7 months from that visit and I have not made ANY changes to the position!! Not only that but there is really no changes that creep into my head to make… I feel much more efficient on the bike than ever before. Worth every penny, and worth a trip from New England down to Austin!! Great stuff!! Thanks Jerry!

Jerry Gerlich and Awesome Bike Guidance

First, my experience was absolutely phenomenal. I had pain, now no longer. Second, it didn’t cost me five arms and six legs. Third, all I had to do was inquire about getting help. Fourth, I received personalized guidance, not just run-of-the-mill comments, and now I will absolutely contact Jerry or Steve for future issues. I was connected with Jerry Gerlich, one of the few trainee’s of Steve Hogg, through my purchase of G8 insoles at Castle Hill Cycles online in Austin, Texas. I thought I was just buying a set of insoles to dampen my unending knee problem on my own, but boy was I wrong.

I was just about to throw in the towel when Jerry offered help on my bike fit. Saying Yes, was the best bike decision I ever made. I listened exactly to his suggestions, AND stuck with it. Over the next few days (and weeks) we communicated and made minor adjustments. I am still shocked that I am riding pain free. We incorporated use of the heel wedge, adjusted insoles and arch support, and modified my pedal setup and baammm, a happy 30-something-year-old ready to race again.

This is as close to a sanctuary as your are going to find in a gym! Here are a few reasons I love CHF 360:

  • Small swimming pool that doesn’t use chlorine – it actually smells slightly of paradise! (Gym pool…how is that even possible?) Hot tub, sauna, steam room are also nice.The locker room plays spa music and doesn’t have any TVs. Add nice wooden lockers with built-in combo locks, high-quality complementary toiletries, and towel service. You just couldn’t ask for a more lovely environment.
  • Very friendly, personable front desk staff. They greeted me by name after my first couple visits. 
  • Lovely exercise rooms and equipment.
  • I highly, highly recommend this gym. It is a treat and a retreat. After a back injury, I was so grateful to have CHF as a place to heal and grow strong again.

As a recreational triathlete I worked with Linda on my swim technique. Boot camp was so hard!!

I have really, seriously, lost a lot of the strength I had before the wedding! At one point I thought I wouldn’t make it through the class, but I made it:). Robert is hilarious. He pushed me to my limit and actually brought out some sass in me, but then had me laughing and pushing myself. I promised him that I would get stronger by the end of next week. My goal is to not stand out as the weakling. Everyone in the class was super encouraging also. So, that’s my report from day 1:)

Last year when I lived in a darling little house in the heart of Clarksville, I had a membership to Castle Hill. At the time I would hear people talking about yoga and they would always said “Take Maricarmen’s Shakti Flow class. She’s the best!” Like many other ‘firsts’ that I’ve experienced during this 30 day adventure, I finally made it around to Maricarmen’s infamous class. I really love this Castle Hill Fitness location. It has become a part of my life, in fact! I initially found the gym because of a mom-group meeting there, but after that dynamic changed, I decided to join the gym as a VIP member. Even though there are gyms closer to where I live, the childcare facilities make driving a little bit farther totally worth while… There is a Mama Strong class that has so many things going for it :

1) you can have a non-mobile with you

2) it’s a great way to start getting back in shape, if you’re postpartum, and

3) the other Moms I have met in class have become my new little tribe. I enjoy the yoga classes as well, and have tried three different instructors. Everything is super clean, and I can’t say enough good things about the staff either. Overall, a great and professional group there. I was about to say CHF feels like a gym/spa, but there is actually a spa as well.

I expected my aches to return as they usually do after regular PT sessions or massage, but my body really seemed to get back on track. I’ve returned to my normal gym routine with little trouble.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from a 3.5 to 4 hour bike fitting that cost 2 to 3 times what others are charge for “Fit” services. What I found out is the time and money was completely worth it for the results I have received from the time with Jerry. Jerry is a true professional and has a genuine passion for what he does as a bike fitting expert. The attention to detail, the long explanations of his methodology and process, and his general concern for my well being were way more than I was expecting. After working through each phase of the process, I jumped back on my bike and was shocked by the way all of the little adjustments came together to provide such a comfortable and efficient position. I took it easy for several weeks after the fit to let my body adjust. Over time I have gotten more and more powerful and have been so pleased at how comfortable I am, even on long rides. I do not have any hot spots or nagging sore areas like my lower back or knees. I cannot recommend Jerry highly enough and would advise anyone who is uncertain about making the investment to give it a try- you will not be disappointed. Jerry is simply the best and you will benefit in a number of ways by working with him.

Everything about it works super well for me–the location is perfectly situated between my home and office, the facilities are fantastic and your staff is amazing. I’ve decided to switch up my class routine this year and transitioned from pilates to more challenging classes like Erin’s Revolution Fit class and Hillary’s barre class. Having noonish classes during the week is awesome and extremely helpful because I can get a workout in during my lunch hour from work and don’t have to worry about trying to make it happen after a long day. And an extra special shout out to the front desk staff who are always so genuinely nice, y’all really do have a great team.

Taking Jessica’s Strength Training for Body Transformation series literally changed my body and my life.

I started the series underweight and without any experience in weight training. After four weeks I had a solid foundation in weightlifting technique and the confidence to work out on my own safely and effectively. I gained 10 pounds (which was my goal) and have continued to strength train and hit my fitness goals with the techniques I learned from Jessica. I highly recommend her series to anyone who is ready to dive and commit to creating a change in their body and lifestyle!

Charly’s teaching really exemplifies the heart opening quality of Anusara yoga.

Through discussion and asana practice, he expanded our connection with our selves and the world around us. He coached our group with care and with his encouragement my practice grew to an entirely new level. I am so glad that I participated in this yoga immersion.

She was substituting the class for Paula but I would love to see her teach more classes at Castle Hill in general and some more during the late afternoon and evening hours. John definitely has competition. She focused appropriately on my problem area and found other adjacent areas that were an issue. Her technique was very effective. I’m still a very happy member of Castle Hill. I was sad when Montserrat left but grateful for the year I had working with her. I was recently inspired to sign up for Tracey’s handstand class. I really enjoy her Sunday Forrest yoga class. In Oct. I bought my daughter 10 private Pilates sessions to recover from her 2 babies in 2 years. I’m really happy that she’s so into it and that she’s learning so much with Stephanie. I think what I’ve appreciated most about CHF is the variety of choices (I never worry that I will get bored) and the excellent staff. I’ve always said, if I quit working and had to cut back on my expenses, my CH dues would never, ever be one of the cuts! Hair color, pedicures, organic food, cleaning lady, all that can go, but not the gym membership! Thanks for checking in!
