Dear reader, I, like many of you, have been suffering from cedar fever. Once the itchy eyes, runny nose and the sneezing begin, the nervous system is already in such a heightened state that calming it down can be a challenge. I have found that yoga practice in either of our two studios with their independent air purifying systems gives my respiratory system a much needed break from the crud in the air and makes it easier to break that vicious cycle of symptoms that accompany cedar fever. Finding balance in yoga practice along with a balanced diet can make it possible to minimize the body’s response to irritants. Ayurveda advises avoiding mucus forming foods, too many sweets, alcohol and anything else that can depress or over-stimulate the immune and digestive systems. Also, don’t forget the most basic thing you can do for your nose, nasal irrigation with a netty pot. Aside from addressing Austin’s annual respiratory irritants you may find that you need relief from aches and pains from time to time. If so, Rachael Bercey, one of our awesome massage therapists, is facilitating a pain management workshop where she will take you through a number of exercises and stretches that can ease your pain. She will teach you how to use tools like the foam roller, tennis balls, back knobbers, etc. to give yourself pain relief when you need it. Of course, nothing beats getting a massage and having a professional get at those knots. Rachael’s workshop will take place on Saturday, February 21st from 12-1:30 PM. This month, we have two yoga workshops that can help bring more focus, clarity and joy to your yoga practice. On Sunday, February 8th Gillian Barksdale will be leading a Joy of Yoga workshop where you will explore the inspiring effect yoga postures have on our overall outlook on life. We have included a brief article on the Joy of Yoga and Gillian’s inspiration for teaching this workshop. Malisa will be facilitating her popular Meditation workshop on Saturday, Feb. 28th from 2:30-4:30 PM. This workshop will explore what meditation is, discuss common misconceptions about meditation, look at common reactions of the beginner, and start meditating. Register before these workshops fill up. Finally, as a reminder to those participating in Mary Keator’s Immersion, Mary will be back in Austin February 21st and 22nd. Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter.
